S.N.D.T. Women’s University was founded in 1916 by the well-known social reformer Bharat Ratna Maharshi Dhondo Keshav Karve. It is an unique institution committed to the cause of women’s education and empowerment. It
was accorded statutory recognition in 1951 and has jurisdiction all over India. Today there are more than 250 colleges affiliated to the University across India.

SNDT Women’s University is committed to the cause of women’s empowerment through access to education, particularly higher education, by providing relevant courses in the formal and non-formal streams. In order to meet
changing soclo-economic needs, with human values and purposeful social responsibility and to achieve excellence with “Quality in every Activity”, SNDT provides a range of courses in various disciplines.

SNDT believes that as a women’s university, it must play a proactive role in addressing issues of social exclusion and therefore it has set up the Centre for the Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy (CSSEIP) in the year 2009. The CSSEIP is sponsored by the University Grants Commission, New Delhi.

SNDT CSSEIP has been established with the following objectives: -
• To develop a theoretical understanding of the nature,
  dynamics and dimensions of discrimination and exclusion
  based on caste/ethnicity, race, religion, gender, age.
  physical and mental abilities etc. in the Indian Context;
• To develop in.depth understanding of discrimination at an
   empirical level; —
• To dialogue and develop partnerships with Civil Society
   Organizations active in the arena of addressing social
• To formulate policies for protecting the rights of excluded
   groups and eradicating the problem of exclusion and
   The specific focus area of SNDT CSSEIP is tribes and
   nomadic tribes of
   Maharashtra and women from excluded communities.
